How many watts at how many ohms? The right setting simply explained

“How many watts should I set?” is one of the questions we hear almost daily in our shop in Freiburg. The good news: you don’t need to calculate anything. The most important information is printed on every coil. In this guide we explain what ohm and watt mean, how they are related and how to find the right setting for your coil.
What do ohm and watt mean for an e-cigarette?
Ohm is the electrical resistance of the coil. Watt is the powerwith which the battery heats the coil.
The coil is the heating element in the atomizer. It heats the liquid until it vaporises. How strongly it heats depends on the power that the battery delivers to it. Power is measured in watts and describes how much electrical energy is converted into heat per second.
How are ohm and watt related?
In physical terms: at the same voltage, more current flows through a lower resistance and more power is converted. Coils with low resistance are therefore designed for higher power, coils with high resistance for low power. Modern devices with power control do the maths for you: you set the watts and the mod adjusts the voltage.
Where do I find the right wattage range for my coil?
On the coil itself, on the packaging or in the product description. The manufacturer states a recommended power range .
Every coil head and every pod has such a range. It is matched to the design, the material and the cotton. You will usually find it engraved directly on the coil housing, for example in the form “0.4Ω 25–35W”. Stick to this range and you are on the safe side.
What guideline values are there?
For orientation, some manufacturer specifications from our range:
| Coil (manufacturer specification) | Resistance | Recommended power range | Typical inhale style |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeekVape B MTL Heads | 1,2 Ohm | 8–12 W | Mouth to lung (MTL) |
| GeekVape B MTL Heads | 0,8 Ohm | 12–16 W | MTL / light RDL |
| GeekVape B Series Heads | 0,6 Ohm | 15–25 W | Restricted direct lung (RDL) |
| GeekVape B Series Heads | 0,4 Ohm | 25–35 W | RDL / direct lung |
| Vaporesso GTX Mesh Heads | 0,3 Ohm | 32–45 W | Direct lung (DL) |
| Vaporesso GTX Mesh Heads | 0,2 Ohm | 45–60 W | Direct lung (DL) |
The table shows the basic principle: the lower the resistance, the higher the recommended power range. However, the exact values differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and from series to series. So never simply transfer them to another coil; always check the specification of your own.
How do I find my setting within the range?
Start low and increase in small stepsuntil flavour and vapour are right for you.
How to proceed:
- Insert a new coil and let the liquid soak in for a few minutes.
- Set the lower value of the recommended range.
- Increase the power in small steps over several draws.
- If the vapour becomes hot, harsh or tastes slightly burnt, go back one step.
Many vapers end up in the middle of the range. There is no single “right” setting, because taste is personal.
What happens if the power is too high?
The cotton cannot resupply the liquid quickly enough and dries out. The result is dry, burnt-tasting draws and a shorter coil life. The BfR also points out that the composition of the vapour depends, among other things, on draw intensity, fill level and battery power, and that harmful substances such as formaldehyde can be produced when liquids are heated. More on this in the guide 7 tips to avoid burnt coils.
What happens if the power is too low?
The liquid vaporises only weakly. The flavour seems flat, and the coil may start to gurgle because liquid collects on the coil. This is less harmful than too much power but usually not pleasant.
Do I even need a wattage setting on a pod system?
Often not. Many pod systems adjust the power automatically to suit the inserted pod.
Simple pod systems detect the resistance of the pod and set the power themselves. Other devices offer a few levels or free wattage adjustment. What your device can do is stated in the user manual. We explain the basics of these devices in the guide What is a pod system?. How ohm and coil are related is explained in What is a coil in the atomizer?.
What role does the inhale style play?
Coils with higher resistance and low power are intended for mouth-to-lung inhales, as known from tobacco cigarettes. Low resistances with higher power belong to direct lung inhales. More on this in the guide What are sub-ohm e-cigarettes?.
Which questions do we hear most often in the shop?
Is there a table for all coils?
No. A universal table would be misleading because each series is built differently. The manufacturer’s specification on your coil is always what counts.
May I go above the recommended range?
We advise against it. Above the range the coil overheats more easily, the cotton burns and the coil head wears out faster.
Why does my device show a different resistance than the coil?
Small deviations are normal because manufacturing and contacts play a role. If the value differs greatly or the device shows an error, check that the coil is seated correctly and reinsert it if necessary.
How many watts for mesh coils?
Here too, the specification on the coil applies. Mesh coils have a larger heating surface and are often designed for slightly higher power than wound wire coils with the same resistance. But don’t rely on this rule of thumb; rely on the specified range.
