What is a pod system? The e-cigarette for beginners simply explained

Hardly any device type is as popular in our shop in Freiburg as the pod system. Adult smokers switching to an e-cigarette for the first time in particular want a device that is small, works simply and feels similar to a cigarette. That is exactly what pod systems were developed for. In this guide you will learn how a pod system is built, which variants exist, which liquid belongs in it and how to look after your device properly.
What is a pod system?
A pod system is a compact e-cigarette made of just two parts: a rechargeable battery and a pod that combines tank and atomizer in one. You attach the pod to the battery, draw on the mouthpiece and the device produces vapour. Most models need no settings.
What parts does a pod system consist of?
The battery unit contains the cell, the electronics and usually an LED or a small display for the charge level. Current devices are charged via USB-C. The pod is a small cartridge with liquid tank, mouthpiece and heating coil. The coil is surrounded by cotton, which soaks up liquid. When you draw, the coil heats the liquid, which vaporises. We will soon explain in detail how a coil works in the guide What is a coil in the atomizer?.
How does draw activation work?
Most pod systems have a sensor that detects the negative pressure when you draw and starts the atomizer automatically. The GeekVape Wenax M2, the Uwell Caliburn G4 Mini and the Vaporesso ECO Nano Plus, for example, work exclusively this way. Some models also have a fire button that you can use to fire deliberately or to lock the device.
What types of pod systems are there?
Not all pod systems are the same. The most important differences are whether you fill the pod yourself and whether you can replace the heating coil separately.
What is the difference between prefilled and refillable?
Prefilled pods come ready-filled and are replaced completely after use; refillable pods are filled by you with the liquid of your choice. Prefilled systems include the Elfbar Elfa battery with Elfa Pods or the Linvo Pod Lite. Refillable systems such as the Wenax M2 or the Vaporesso XROS Pro 2 leave you free to choose your liquid. The running cost factors of the different systems are explained in the guide What are the running costs of an e-cigarette?.
Fixed coil or replaceable coil head?
Many pods have a built-in coil, for example the Elfbar Elfa empty pod with 1.1 Ohm or the Vaporesso XROS COREX 3.0 Pods. When the flavour gets weaker, you replace the whole pod. With other devices such as the Vaporesso LUXE XR MAX 2, you just insert a new GTX coil into the pod. This saves material. Which pods and coils belong to which device is shown in the overview of pods and coils.
Why do many switchers start with a pod system?
Many adults coming from smoking don’t want to deal with watts, ohms and battery cells first. Pod systems take exactly that off their hands.
Pod systems are small, light, easy to use and usually designed for mouth-to-lung inhales, which feel similar to a tobacco cigarette. The Caliburn G4 Mini, for example, weighs only 46 grams. In addition, many models let you adjust the airflow to adapt the draw resistance to your habits.
What do MTL, RDL and DL mean?
MTL stands for “mouth to lung”: you first draw the vapour into your mouth and then inhale it, as with a cigarette. Pods of about 0.8 to 1.2 Ohm are intended for this. RDL (“restricted direct lung”) is a looser lung inhale with a little more vapour, often at 0.6 Ohm. DL (“direct lung”) means direct lung inhales with lots of vapour and low resistance. We explain this sub-ohm vaping in the guide What are sub-ohm e-cigarettes?.
Which liquid belongs in a pod system?
For MTL pods, many vapers use nicotine salt liquids with 10 or 20 mg/ml and a balanced mixing ratio such as 50PG/50VG. Under the German Tobacco Products Act, more than 20 mg/ml is not permitted in Germany. Examples are SC Red Line nicotine salts, Pod Salt Core or Revoltage FLEX, many of them also available with 0 mg/ml. Nicotine strengths and mixing ratios of further liquids can be found in the overview of 10 ml liquids. Very thick liquids with a high VG content are less suitable for most small pods.
What should you look for when choosing?
In the shop, we always first ask how and how much someone vapes. The most important selection criteria follow from that.
Pay attention above all to battery life, inhale style, filling system and the availability of replacement pods. These points matter more for your satisfaction than the design.
Which features are important?
- Battery: Compact devices have around 1,100 to 1,400 mAh (Caliburn G4 Mini, Wenax M2, ECO Nano Plus), larger ones up to 2,000 mAh (XROS Pro 2) or 3,200 mAh (LUXE XR MAX 2).
- Inhale style: For switching an MTL pod is usually the right choice. If you want more vapour later, the LUXE XR MAX 2 offers MTL and DTL pods in one kit.
- Filling: Side, top or bottom filling. Which variant you find easiest is mainly a matter of habit.
- Settings: With draw activation and no settings, or with display and wattage control, such as the XROS Pro 2 from 15 to 30 watts.
- Spare parts: Check beforehand which pods or coils belong to the device and whether they are easy to get.
Technical data of the individual models can be found in the overview of pod systems. How pods differ from disposables and box mods is shown in our overview What types of e-cigarettes are there?.
How do you look after your pod system properly?
With a little care your device lasts longer and the flavour stays consistent. The most important steps are quickly learned.
Do not fill the pod above the mark, let a new pod soak for a few minutes and replace it as soon as the flavour fades. Also keep the contacts between pod and battery dry.
When do you need to change the pod?
Typical signs are a weaker or burnt taste, less vapour or a gurgling noise. Sweet liquids often gunk up the coil faster. We will soon explain what helps with a burnt taste in the guide E-cigarette tastes burnt – what to do?. If your pod is leaking liquid, read The e-cigarette is leaking – what helps?.
How do you charge the battery safely?
Charge your device with a suitable USB-C cable and not unattended overnight. The BfR recommends using only the chargers and batteries specified by the manufacturer for the product. A damaged device should no longer be charged but handed in at a retailer or at the recycling centre .
Which questions do we hear most often in the shop?
Finally, the questions we are asked most often about pod systems in Freiburg.
How long does a pod last?
That depends on the liquid, power and your consumption. No fixed value can be given; it is often a few days to about a week.
Can I fill any liquid into any pod system?
Basically yes, as long as the mixing ratio suits the pod. For MTL pods, liquids with 50PG/50VG are more suitable; very VG-heavy liquids can soak the cotton less well.
What is the difference between a pod system and a disposable e-cigarette?
With a pod system the battery stays and you only replace the pod; a disposable e-cigarette is disposed of completely after use. This creates less electronic waste.
Is a pod system also suitable for non-smokers?
No. If you don’t smoke, you shouldn’t start vaping either. The DKFZ explicitly advises non-smokers and young people against e-cigarettes, and the BfR points to health risks and the addictive potential of nicotine.
Note: This guide is intended exclusively for adult smokers and vapers. We sell all products only to persons aged 18 and over. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance. This article does not replace medical advice.
