Anyone who switches from smoking to e-cigarettes quickly notices that the stale smoke smell in clothes and curtains is gone. Even so, many people in our shop in Freiburg ask us whether vaping can be smelled in the flat and whether the smoke detector can go off. In this guide we answer both questions and tell you what you should consider out of consideration for others.

Can you smell an e-cigarette in a room?

Usually yes, but differently from cigarette smoke. What you smell is mainly the flavour of the liquid, and the smell usually disappears more quickly.

With an e-cigarette no tobacco is burned; instead a liquid is vaporised. That is why there is no typical burnt smell. From our experience, how strongly the vapour can be smelled in the room depends mainly on the flavour, the amount of vapour and the ventilation. Others often notice sweet or fruity flavours more clearly than you do yourself.

Does the smell linger in furniture and clothes?

Much less than with tobacco smoke. But if you vape a lot and with large vapour clouds in a small, poorly ventilated room, you may leave a slight smell.

Does vapour leave residue in the flat?

With a lot of vapour in small rooms, a light film can form on windows or smooth surfaces. Regular airing helps.

Vapour consists of fine droplets, mainly of propylene glycol and glycerin. According to the BfR, the e-cigarette releases these substances into the room air as visible vapour. Part of it can settle on surfaces. We are not aware from practice of walls turning yellow as with tobacco smoke, but there is no guarantee of this.

Can an e-cigarette set off the smoke detector?

Yes. The vapour can trigger both optical and ionisation smoke detectors, especially if a lot of vapour reaches the detector directly.

A publication in the journal Tobacco Control describes that the exhaled aerosol from e-cigarettes can trigger both common types of smoke detectors. The risk is greater in small rooms, with large vapour clouds and if you vape directly under the detector.

What should you do?

  • Don’t vape directly under or towards a smoke detector.
  • Air the room regularly.
  • Never cover smoke detectors or switch them off. They save lives in a fire.
  • Follow the house rules in hotels, holiday flats and public buildings. Vaping is often prohibited there.

Is vaping in the flat a problem for others?

Based on current knowledge, the BfR considers health risks for third parties to be possible. So do not vape in the presence of children, pregnant women or sick people.

As part of non-smoker protection, the BfR recommends treating e-cigarettes like conventional cigarettes. If you live with others, it is best to talk openly about where vaping takes place.

Which questions do we hear most often in the shop?

Will people notice if I vape in the car?

In a confined car the flavour can usually be smelled clearly. Ventilate well and don’t vape when children are on board.

Are there liquids that smell less?

Flavours with a subtle note are less noticeable. Less vapour, for example with mouth-to-lung vaping on a pod system, also reduces the smell. More on this in the guide What is a pod system?.

Am I allowed to vape in my rented flat?

That is a legal question that depends on the tenancy agreement and the individual case. If in doubt, ask your landlord or a tenants’ advice service.
