What is a coil in the atomizer? Function and lifespan simply explained

The coil is the heart of every e-cigarette, and yet many vapers don’t know exactly what it does. In this guide we explain how a coil is built, which types exist and how to tell that it needs replacing.
What is a coil?
The coil is the heating element in the atomizer. It heats the liquid until it vaporises. Often the whole coil head with heating wire and cotton is also called a coil.
The BfR describes the principle like this: the liquid is not burned but heated and, in most devices, vaporised at 150 to 200 degrees Celsius. The battery supplies the power for this.
How is a coil built?
A coil consists of a heating wire or heating mesh and a wick, usually made of cotton. The cotton draws the liquid from the tank and holds it at the heating element. When you draw, current flows through the heating element, it gets hot and vaporises the liquid in the cotton.
What types of coils are there?
Built-in coils (in the pod or cartridge) and replaceable coil heads. There is also the distinction between wire and mesh coils.
Built-in or replaceable?
In many pod systems the coil is built into the pod. When it is used up, you replace the whole pod, for example with the Vaporesso ECO Nano Pods or the GeekVape Q Cartridge. With other devices you only change the coil head, for example with the Vaporesso GTX Mesh Heads. Which pods and heads belong to which device is shown in the overview of pods and coils.
What is a mesh coil?
Instead of a wound wire, a mesh coil uses a flat metal mesh. The surface that heats the liquid is therefore larger. Many current pods and heads use mesh, for example the LUXE X Dual Mesh Pods from Vaporesso.
Are there also coils you build yourself?
Yes. With so-called rebuildable atomizers you wrap wire and cotton yourself. This requires experience, a resistance meter and knowledge of battery safety. For beginners we recommend ready-made coil heads.
What does the ohm rating on the coil mean?
Ohm indicates the electrical resistance. Higher values (from about 1.0 Ohm) usually suit mouth-to-lung inhales, lower values (below 1.0 Ohm) rather lung inhales.
Every coil or its packaging also states a recommended power range in watts. Stick to it: too much power can overheat the coil. Read more about low resistances in the guide What are sub-ohm e-cigarettes?.
How long does a coil last?
There is no fixed interval. The lifespan depends on the liquid, the power and your vaping habits .
Sweet liquids leave more residue on the coil and shorten its life. High power and chain vaping also strain the cotton. How to tell that a change is due:
- The flavour fades or becomes dull.
- It tastes burnt or harsh.
- The amount of vapour decreases noticeably.
- The coil gurgles or spits even though the tank is filled correctly.
How do you extend the lifespan?
- Let it soak: After inserting a new coil or pod, let the liquid soak in for a few minutes before your first draw.
- Never vape the tank empty: Without liquid, the dry cotton is heated and burns.
- Watch the power: Stay within the wattage range specified by the manufacturer.
- Take breaks: Wait briefly between draws so the cotton can soak up more liquid.

Which questions do we hear most often in the shop?
Can I clean a coil?
Ready-made coil heads are intended as wear parts. If the cotton is used up or burnt, cleaning won’t help in the long term. Replace the coil then.
Does every coil fit every atomizer?
No. Coils and pods are usually only compatible with certain devices or series. Compatibility is stated in the product description.
What do I do with old coils?
Follow the disposal instructions of the manufacturer and your local authority. Anything with a battery is electronic waste and does not belong in household waste. More on this in the guide How do you dispose of e-cigarettes correctly?.
