You have freshly mixed your liquid and it tastes flat or unbalanced? That is completely normal. Many flavours need time to blend with the base . This process is called steeping. In this guide we explain what happens, which methods exist and which ones we prefer to avoid from experience.

What does “steeping” mean for liquids?

Steeping means letting the mixed liquid rest for a while so that flavour and base blend evenly.

The manufacturer Vaporesso describes steeping as the time in which the flavours of a liquid fully develop. Liquids with several flavours benefit in particular, because the individual flavour notes only blend gradually.

How long does a liquid need to steep?

That depends on the flavour. Simple fruit flavours often need hardly any time, creamy or dessert blends considerably longer.

According to Vaporesso, complex dessert or cream blends often need more than four weeks, while simple fruit recipes sometimes don’t need to steep at all. Most flavour manufacturers state a recommended steeping time on the bottle. Use that as your first guide.

How do I steep a liquid correctly?

The gentlest is the slow method: close the bottle tightly, store it cool and dark and shake it now and then.

Here’s how to proceed:

  1. Mix your liquid and shake the bottle thoroughly.
  2. Label the bottle with its contents and date.
  3. Place it closed in a cool, dark place, for example in a drawer or cupboard.
  4. Shake it regularly at first.
  5. After a while, try whether you like the taste.

Vaporesso points out that sunlight and heat can spoil the process. Keep the bottles out of reach of children and pets during steeping as well.

Are there methods that speed up steeping?

Yes, for example a warm water bath. However, these methods are controversial, and for nicotine-containing liquids we recommend the slow method.

Some vapers place the closed bottle in warm, not hot, water. Vaporesso explicitly advises against working with high heat or a lot of air contact and recommends the slow method for nicotine-containing liquids. “Breathing” with the cap open is also controversial: it can worsen the taste, and the liquid can become contaminated.

What we don’t recommend

Microwaves, ovens or hot water have no place near liquids. The bottle can deform, and you risk making the liquid unusable.

How can I tell that a liquid is no longer good?

A clearly changed smell, an unpleasant taste or flocculation are warning signs. In that case you should no longer vape the liquid.

A slight change in colour during steeping is normal for many flavours. We explain how long liquids generally last and how to store them correctly in the guide How long do liquids last?.

Which questions do we hear most often in the shop?

Do ready-made liquids also need to steep?

Ready-made liquids can usually be vaped straight away. A quick shake before filling does no harm.

Does a liquid keep getting better the longer it steeps?

No. At some point the taste is at its best, after which it can decline again. So try it in between.

Can I let a liquid steep in the tank?

We advise against it. In the tank the liquid is exposed to air and the coil . It is better to let it steep closed in the bottle.
