“Can I still vape this liquid?” We often hear this question when someone has found a forgotten bottle in a drawer. Liquids don’t go bad suddenly, but flavour and quality decline over time. Here you will learn how long liquids last, how to recognise old liquid and how to store it correctly.

How long does a liquid keep?

Unopened and stored correctly, most liquids keep for about two years according to manufacturers. The date on the bottle is what counts.

Liquids usually consist of propylene glycol and/or glycerin, plus flavourings and possibly nicotine. These ingredients change over time, mainly due to light, heat and oxygen. The manufacturer Vaporesso states a shelf life of around two years when stored correctly. How long a particular liquid lasts, however, depends on its ingredients. So stick to the date printed by the manufacturer.

Does opened liquid keep for less time?

As soon as the bottle is open, air reaches the liquid. So close the bottle tightly again after every refill and use up opened bottles first before opening new ones.

How can I tell that a liquid is old?

By a clearly changed colour, a different smell, a changed consistency or a flat taste.

Vaporesso advises no longer using a liquid if its smell, thickness or colour has changed significantly. A slightly darker colour alone is normal for some flavours, such as tobacco or vanilla. But if a liquid smells unusual or something has settled that no longer mixes in, dispose of it .

Is expired liquid dangerous?

According to manufacturers, an old liquid mainly loses flavour and possibly nicotine. Whether it has further health effects has not been sufficiently studied. We recommend no longer using expired liquids.

How do I store liquid correctly?

Cool, dark, dry, tightly closed and in the original bottle.

  • Cool: Keep liquids at room temperature or below, not on the radiator, in the car or in the sun.
  • Dark: Light changes flavours. A cupboard or drawer is well suited.
  • Tightly closed: This way as little air as possible reaches the liquid.
  • In the original bottle: It shows the ingredients, nicotine content, warnings and the date.

Can liquid go in the fridge?

That isn’t necessary. If you do it anyway, let the liquid return to room temperature before filling. Cold liquid is thicker and soaks into the coil cotton less well.

Why is child-safe storage so important?

Nicotine-containing liquids are poisonous if swallowed. Always keep them out of reach of children and pets.

In Germany, nicotine-containing refill containers must be child-resistant and break-proof and may hold no more than 10 millilitres (§ 14 TabakerzG). However, this does not replace safe storage. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) points out that nicotine is particularly harmful to children and young people. In the event of an accident with liquid, contact a poison control centre immediately.

How long does liquid last in the tank?

You shouldn’t leave liquid standing in the tank for weeks.

According to Vaporesso, a filled tank leaks more easily if it is not used for several days. In addition, the taste in the cotton can change. If you won’t use your device for a while, empty the tank.

Which questions do we hear most often in the shop?

Why does my new liquid taste different from the last one?

Flavours can differ slightly from batch to batch. Often, however, the coil is the cause: an old coil distorts the taste. More on this in the guide What is a coil in the atomizer?.

Can I freeze liquid?

We advise against it. It brings no benefit, and temperature changes can strain the bottle and the liquid.

Do I need to shake liquid before vaping?

A quick shake does no harm and redistributes flavours that have settled.
